Why a Positive Company Culture Matters
Today, teams are spending more time working independently online than together. This change in company culture may make it seem as if your workplace environment does not matter as much, but, in fact, it still does. According to an article by Forbes, employees who feel their voice is heard at work are around 4.6 times more likely to feel more empowered to perform their best work.
Working online makes this more of a challenge though because there is not as much face-to-face interaction with team members compared to when you were in the office. Nowadays, employees are finding themselves working longer hours, feeling increasingly lonely, and burnt out in some cases.
Promoting a positive company culture not only helps employees feel happier at work but also creates a more productive work environment. Harvard Business Review reported a study done by Gallup which found that companies with disengaged workers had 60 percent more work errors and defects.
There is no right way to measure your company culture but there are steps you can take to help promote a more positive environment.
1. Promote wellness activities
A stressful work environment is one of the major factors that generate a negative company culture. If your company offers any form of self-care or mental wellness programs, then be sure to make your team aware of the offerings. Employees may not always be aware of everything their company provides employees and this will give them options to destress.
2. Remind your team to take breaks
Working at home makes it easier to forget to take breaks throughout the day. In fact, most employees are finding themselves working longer hours now that they're at home. To help prevent team members from overworking, encourage your team to take their entire break during the day.
3. Host bi-weekly team catch-ups
At least twice a month get together with your team for an hour over video and catch up. Avoid talking about work and instead, use this time to have fun and bond as a team.
4. Send out a survey
The best way to find out what could be improved is to ask your teammates. If you want to keep it anonymous then send out a survey or conduct one-on-one meetings with your team to see how they're doing and what you can do to help better the work culture.
