Five Interview Questions to Assess a Company’s Culture

During an interview it’s likely you’ll be spending the majority of your time answering questions regarding your different abilities and past experiences and how they will fit into the role in question. However, it’s also important to remember that an interview is a two-way street. While the interviewer is trying to decide if you will be a good fit for the company, you’re also deciding if the company will be a good fit for you. In order to make that judgment, use these five questions below to better understand the company’s culture and whether or not it’s one you would like to be a part of.

What is the management style like?

The management style an organization governs itself with can shape company culture, and vice versa. Before asking this question, first determine which management style works best for you. Do you prefer a manager that is very involved with your work, or one with a more laid-back approach? How do you prefer to communicate with a manager? From here, it will be easier to grasp if the management style used at the organization will work for you and thus whether or not you will be able to properly assimilate into their culture.

What are your company values?

A company’s values are the guiding principles that the organization is built upon. From upper management to entry-level positions, every employee strives to work in alignment with these values. By asking about this aspect in your interview, you’re able to gain an understanding of what is really at the core of the organization, what it is that keeps them going. If through your research you’ve already found what these values are, ask how these values are evident in the day-to-day or if there is a specific value that stands out to your interviewer.

What employee activities/events does the company hold?

Organizations with strong cultures know creating a welcoming environment for all gives employees the opportunities to build trust within one another and ultimately form stronger bonds and even workplace friendships. This means organizations will often provide opportunities for these relationships to flourish outside of work. If forming more than just a professional network sounds like a perk you’re looking for, be sure to ask about what specific opportunities the organization holds in order to make this a reality. Learning more about potential events you’ll attend, groups to join, and other engaging options can give you an inside look at the company’s culture in action.

Are there any career development opportunities available?

If you're looking for an opportunity to grow professionally in your new role, you’ll want to have an understanding of how your potential new company plans to help you reach this goal. During your interview, ask about the opportunities available for career development in order to learn more about trainings, courses, mentorships, networking events, and more that will help you reach your full potential. If the answer excites you, chances are this company – and its culture – could be the right fit for you.

How does the company celebrate employee wins?

Being recognized for your hard work can give you a sense of pride for what you do and ultimately lead to higher motivation and more productivity within your role. With that being said, it’s important to understand just how your potential new role will recognize your accomplishments and if it sounds like a suitable reward. For example, perhaps you’re aiming for recognition from your team members through a shoutout on your company’s social media pages or internal communications, or maybe you’re looking for a reflection of your accomplishments with an increase in responsibilities, a raise, or some well-deserved vacation time. Whatever your ideas of recognition and celebration are, be sure your company is on the same page in order to successfully feel part of the culture.
